Designing to the material
Available sizes should inform the roof plan. If you want graduated coursing you need long uninterrupted planes; if the design is heavily dormered, a single size in 18" will read better than a graduated roof that never gets room to diminish.
Structure
A slate roof runs roughly 800–1,500 lb per square depending on thickness. Get the number to the structural engineer at schematic design, not after the trusses are ordered.
Reserve early
On a new build the roof is twelve to eighteen months out from your first conversation. Reclaimed lots do not sit that long. Reserve at award and we will hold and stage the material to your roof-dry date.
