Reviewers look for replacement material that matches the original in composition, design, colour, texture and visual quality. Reclaimed slate from the same quarry region as the original satisfies that test directly, which is why it is specified on tax-credit and commission-reviewed work.
Sequence
Survey the existing roof and record slate size, exposure, thickness and colour. Get a slate off the building to us early. Confirm availability at your quantity before the specification is issued, because a rare colour at 80 squares is a sourcing project, not a purchase.
Details that fail first
Valleys, chimney saddles and the flashing at dormer cheeks. Specify copper, stainless or lead-coated copper throughout; galvanised steel will take the surrounding slate with it when it goes.
